Green Lagos Society

About Green Lagos Society

Green Lagos Society is a dedicated environmental collective focused on the restoration and preservation of Lagos’s most vital resource: its waterways. In a city where land and water are inextricably linked, our mission is to reclaim the “Blue Heart” of Lagos from the mounting pressures of plastic pollution, industrial runoff, and urban neglect. We operate at the intersection of environmental conservation and public health, ensuring that our lagoons, creeks, and shorelines remain lifelines for the millions who depend on them.

Our Mission: A Cleaner, Blue Lagos

Guided by SDG 14 (Life Below Water) and SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), Green Lagos Society works to restore the ecological integrity of the Lagos Lagoon and the Atlantic coast. We believe that clean water is a fundamental right and that the health of our city’s economy—from fishing to transport—is dependent on the cleanliness of our aquatic ecosystems.

Our Strategic Focus Areas

Waterway Remediation & De-silting

We lead large-scale efforts to clear the city’s complex network of canals and creeks. By removing non-biodegradable waste and blockages, we not only improve water quality but also significantly reduce the risk of flash flooding in vulnerable coastal communities on Lagos Island and the Mainland.

Floating Waste Management Systems

Innovation is at our core. We deploy and maintain localized “trash traps” and floating barriers designed to catch plastic debris before it enters the Atlantic Ocean. These systems are monitored by local community members, creating a sense of ownership and immediate environmental impact.

Marine Ecosystem Advocacy

We conduct intensive outreach programs targeting the root causes of water pollution. By working directly with shoreline markets and transport hubs, we promote “Zero-Waste” habits that prevent refuse from being dumped into the water, protecting the biodiversity of the Lagos Lagoon

Why Our Work is Urgent

Lagos is one of the world’s fastest-growing coastal cities, but its beauty and health are threatened by an invisible crisis beneath the surface. From microplastics affecting our food chain to blocked channels causing environmental displacement, the stakes have never been higher. Green Lagos Society is not just cleaning water; we are securing the future of our city’s climate resilience.

Through persistent action and community-led surveillance, we are turning the tide against water pollution and ensuring that the “Center of Excellence” shines from its streets to its shores.

Key Achievements of Green Lagos Society

Kilometers Cleared

Successfully de-silted and cleared over 15km of critical drainage channels across the Lagos Mainland, directly reducing flood incidents in neighboring residential areas.

Plastic Recovery

Intercepted and recovered over 12,000kg of marine-bound plastic through our network of community water-guards

Water Quality Monitoring

Established a citizen-science program that regularly tests and reports on the BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand) levels in the Lagos Lagoon to track pollution trends.
