About the project.

The Greenwork Society Project is a grassroots initiative dedicated to fostering environmental resilience and sustainable urban living within the heart of Nigeria’s most populous city. We believe that the challenges of rapid urbanization—specifically in a coastal megacity like Lagos—require localized, innovative, and community-driven solutions. By bridging the gap between ecological theory and practical engineering, we empower residents to become active stewards of their environment.

project Mission and Vision.

Our work is deeply rooted in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically targeting Good Health and Well-being (SDG 3), Clean Water and Sanitation (SDG 6), and Life Below Water (SDG 14). We recognize that the health of our communities is inextricably linked to the health of our waterways and the efficiency of our waste systems.

Core Pillars of Impact

Sustainable Water & Waste Management (Lagos Island)

Lagos Island faces unique geographical challenges. We focus on implementing and advocating for sustainable water practices and circular waste management systems. By reducing plastic runoff and improving sanitation literacy, we directly protect the Lagos Lagoon and the Atlantic coastline, preserving marine ecosystems for future generations.

Environmental Awareness & Advocacy

Change begins with a shift in mindset. We have instigated comprehensive environmental awareness campaigns across various communities on the Lagos Mainland. These campaigns translate complex ecological data into actionable steps for everyday citizens, highlighting how proper waste disposal prevents flooding and reduces the spread of waterborne diseases.

Eco-Engineering & Youth Empowerment

We believe in “learning by doing.” Greenwork Society hosts hands-on eco-engineering workshops designed for youth and local artisans. These sessions teach participants how to upcycle waste materials into functional tools and how to build low-cost filtration systems. By equipping the next generation with technical green skills, we are building a workforce capable of navigating the climate challenges of tomorrow.

Why It Matters

Lagos is a city defined by its relationship with water. From the bustling streets of the Mainland to the historic corridors of the Island, our project serves as a catalyst for a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable Lagos. We don’t just talk about the environment; we engineer the tools to save it.

Through collaboration, education, and grit, the Greenwork Society Project is turning environmental challenges into opportunities for innovation and community growth.

Achievements

Water & Sanitation (SDG 6 & 14)

  • Lagos Island Coastal Protection: Successfully diverted over 5 tons of plastic waste from the Lagos Lagoon through community-led beach and drainage clean-up exercises.
  • Marine Advocacy: Launched the “Clean Lagoon Initiative,” a series of workshops for local fishermen on sustainable disposal of fishing gear and plastic waste to preserve aquatic life.

Eco-Engineering & Skills (SDG 8 & 12)

  • Youth Innovation Hub: Trained 150+ youths and local artisans in Lagos in “Trash-to-Treasure” engineering, teaching them to convert discarded tires and wood into functional school furniture.
  • Prototype Development: Designed and prototyped a mobile greywater recycling unit specifically for small-scale Lagosian workshops to reduce industrial water wastage.

Awareness & Health (SDG 3)

  • Mainland Sensitization: Reached over 10,000 residents across Lagos Mainland through the “Healthy Streets, Healthy Lives” campaign, focusing on the link between blocked drains and malaria/cholera outbreaks.
  • School Eco-Clubs: Established environmental clubs in 10 public secondary schools, empowering students to lead waste segregation and recycling programs within their campuses.
